Pedestrians push-button

The pedestrian push-button assembly, or so called push-to-walk button, is designated for pedestrian crossings with installed traffic light signalling devices. The depressed push-button activates a request for free passage and sends it out to the traffic controller. Next, the relevant traffic light is lighted up (green / go signal). The free passage confirmation, i.e. received request, is visible on the lighted panel with WAIT instruction; after the relevant traffic light is switched over to „Go" mode, the displayed instruction is switched off. In the case the push-button assembly also contains a tactile element, it provides a combined function – it allows to disconnect acoustic signalling for visually impaired persons. This option is used in situations where acoustic signalling devices for the blind are located, i.e. spaced, within 4m distances, or if the pedestrian crossing is separated (split zebra). The objective is to hear the acoustic signal only in the walking direction which corresponds to the push-button. The visually impaired person then disconnects the acoustic signal placed above, i.e. in front of the crossing, and during the interval the button is held depressed, the person hears only the signal in the intended walking direction. This arrangement helps visually impaired people to maintain better orientation.

Technical Description:

The basis of the push-button assembly is a yellow plastic enclosure with a black large-area taction pad with low switch profile. The taction pad carries a yellow symbol depicting a walking pedestrian. The upper part carries a red optical signalling window with a black-typed illuminated instruction WAIT. The rear wall of the casing consists of a compound plastic sheet with a guiding groove and mounting cutout. The rear panel also includes a grommet with a multicore cable for connecting the push-button to the pole terminal board. The pedestrian push-button shall be installed onto the pole at minimum height 1000 mm, maximum height 1500 mm above the sidewalk surface and facing the intended direction of cross-over. If the assembly is not mounted on a standalone pole, it has to be clearly marked as "Pedestrian Push-button."
